In Dubai, traffic accidents kill one person every 37 hours and injure one person every 3 hours. Novice traffic accident investigators in the Dubai police force are expected to 'learn by doing' in this intense environment. Currently, they use no alternative to the real world in order to practice. This paper argues for the use of an alternative learning environment, where the novice investigator can feel safe in exploring different investigative routes without fear for the consequences. The paper describes a game-based learning environment that has been built using a game engine. The effectiveness of this environment in improving the performance of traffic accident investigators is also presented. BinSubaih A., Maddock S., Romano D.M. (2006). "A Serious Game for Traffic Accident Investigators". Special Issue of International Journal of Interactive Technology and Smart Education on "Computer Game-based Learning."(to appear). The Serious Games mail list has been humming over the past week or so with exchanges and examples of Eco Games. I thought that I should share some of them with you:
General Electric's Ecomagination website - 'jet engines are good for the planet.
CO2FX is a web based multi-user educational game which explores the relationship of global warming to economic, political and science policy decisions.
Chris Crawford's game Balance of the Planet remake using Flash. The game puts you in the position of controlling global environmental policies. You can adjust taxes to increase your budget for research and subsidies and to encourage or discourage various behaviors. You can then take your tax income and use it to further technical research or to provide subsidies for such things as family planning or building recycling centers. Get Marketing is a new game by Pixie Learning delivered for Scottish Enterprise - a UK Government Regional Development Agency - which aims to make owners/managers of small companies more aware and able to apply the various tools of marketing in order to increase sales.
This game's roots lie in research carried out by Scottish Enterprise that identified that many of the country's smaller companies (e.g. under 250 employees) had a limited understanding of what marketing really involved.
The aim of the game is to overcome that weakness, by use of a challenging and engaging but instructionally valid business game, in order that the end users are better able to make marketing decisions and to identify the sources of assistance that can help them improve their marketing knowledge, skills and capability.
The game is currently available free of charge and temporarily hosted at the URL below. It requires a simple registration and will be moved in the next month or so to a dedicated Scottish Enterprise web portal. Via Serious Games |
